Pub Review

U Kurelů American BBQ meets the Czech Pub

Spanning an expansive, beautiful corner pub in Žižkov, U Kurelů brings American BBQ to Prague with enthusiasm and gusto. Operated by the owners of The Tavern, who helped bring about Prague's burger revolution, U Kurelů is still a work in progress but none the less a prime drinking spot serving an authentic taste of American BBQ.

High ceilings, large windows, and a few vintage touches give U Kurelů that slightly retro-neighborhood pub feeling. This spacious pub has a unique atmosphere, comprised of a cross between classic Americana and an effort to preserve the retro Czech style that once made this drinking spot famous. Along the bar, tall stools are filled with an already growing crowd of regulars. Dimly lit, one wall is lined with huge, old windows opening to the street.

On tap, they’ve currently got Pilsner and some bargain priced Gambrinus. Two taps serve microbrew beer, normally Permon’s IPA and Chotěboř’s amber lager. Permon’s IPA, which despite being a lighter, more ‘Czech’ sort of IPA, is quite refreshing and goes well with BBQ. Bartenders here are skilled to mix a variety of cocktails. In the future, they plan to turn in their Pilsner and Gambrinus taps and focus on Czech microbrews.

Currently, U Kurelů’s kitchen is a project underway, but this doesn’t mean you have to go hungry. Every evening, a different ‘pop-up’ kitchen is featured. The house speciality is a menu of American BBQ, including a variety of quesadillas, pulled pork platters, and ribs. On select nights, Prague Pie Shop serves their trendy meat pies, ‘Hot Dog Happy Hours’ are the main attraction, and burgers are often the dish of the evening.

Service is a genuinely happy brand of professionalism, with a straight forward manner. Be sure to check out their Facebook and Twitter for updates, as every evening, something different is on the menu. We’ll be sure to update our review when they’ve got their kitchen up and going, but until then, U Kurelů is still a fun place for drinks and dinner with friends. Located on the corner of Kubelíkova and Chvalova, the nearest metro is Jiřího z Poděbrad and tram stop is Lipanská (trams 5, 9, and 26).
